Bringing together musicians who have spent time with the likes of The Faceless, Fallujah and All Shall Perish, The Zenith Passage serves as a vessel for these virtuosic musicians to spread cosmic technical death metal to ears worldwide. The California act’s sound casually nods to those that inspired it like The Faceless and Spawn of Possession, while maintaining its own identity. Though the band’s sound has a similar approach to that of Planetary Duality-era The Faceless, and some people may be quick to label the band as “copycats”, further exploration will show that The Zenith Passage merely use that influence as a jumping-off point and that their sound is more visceral, hard-hitting and eclectic. Solipsist, the band’s full-length debut, is one of the few newer technical death metal records that successfully revitalizes a slowly stagnating genre.
Vancouver Metalcore 5 piece THE WANING LIGHT have just unleashed their crushing 5 song ep “One Plague Shy of Utopia.” The band will be celebrating this release on Friday August 5th with an Apocalypse Sunrise Productions event at Funky Winker Beans in Vancouver. Fans of Behold the Arctopus, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Between the Buried and Me, should definitely give this ep a spin. Rsvp for the facebook event below and download the new ep for free.

In 2012, my band was playing a theater show and the production manager of the venue was practically falling over himself insisting I check out his new favorite band. “Who are they?” I remarked as I hauled amps and instruments into the darkened room. “Excruciating Pain, man!” he exclaimed. He proceeded to tell me that they were “triumphant, technical, party, death metal.” Given the typical genre tropes one would associate with death metal, this unique description had me intrigued.
Fast forward to 2016, “Expain” as they are now called (thanks to a cease and desist order from another act called Excruciating Pain) have become one of the premiere heavy bands in the pacific northwest. I took a few minutes to chat with guitarist and band founder Pat Peeve and vocalist Sean lp about all things excruciating and not at all painful.
