Recently formed duo HE IS ME have unveiled their 2nd single “Drowning Man/Ocean.” This particular piece marries two separate tracks together to create a unified whole. The sound could be described as not unlike a hybrid of the bombast of Swans with the artful slow burn often deployed by the likes of Massive Attack and Zombi. HE IS ME are a partnership between songwriter Casey Braunger and vocalist Steve Moore. Together they have conceived a memorable slice of menacing beauty. This performance savvy is a bi product of Moore’s years spent in Progressive/Industrial outfit The Unraveling and Braunger’s work in Textile Arcade.
HE IS ME clearly know their strengths and play to them accordingly. Case in point: hypnotic, meditative choral motifs erupt in a bombastic refrain in”Drowning Man/Ocean Man.” Moore’s claustrophobic reiterations of “He’s ocean, no longer a man” give way to a tidal wave outro chorus that will appeal to listeners of industrial, art rock, and hard rock. This new track could be described as the audio equivalent of pushing a rock up the hill only to have the downward slope on the other side covered in thorns. HE IS ME are clearly hitting their creative stride on “Drowning Man/Ocean Man”.
