Mesarthim is a cosmic atmospheric/trance like black metal act based out of Australia and out of all of the black metal bands who use the open void that is the universe as their main theme, Mesarthim is the best. I’ve been an avid fan of theirs since I first heard their debut release “Isolate” early last year. They capture the endless drifting feeling, isolation and capture just how small and insignificant we truly are on this floating rock we call Earth. The new album, “.- -… … . -. -.-. .”, (No I am not going to try to decode that Morse code) is another fine step in the right direction for this bands style and they add even more black metal moments to the writing to make it even more heavy.
With a slightly more focused ear on the guitars and screams, Mesarthim comes right out of the gate on this release with a strong riff and howling screams. Body shifting atmospheres are again present during the play of the song and all of this bands grandeur is poured out almost immediately. There is no slight build up, this is a rocket blast of music straight towards the middle of the universe. While atmosphere and ambiance has always been the main focus for Mesarthim, I notice more attention being paid towards the correct tempos to use and rhythms to conjure while said atmospheres are being blasted. The result is a fantastic journey through nothingness and it’s rather…..beautiful.
Vocals are loud screams that you can barely understand, howling over the compositions and creating a large layer of vocal remedies to go along side the riffs and keys. Mesarthim definitely keeps up with their common theme well and add a sense of depressive notations to it all and of course being able to make it all sound so beautiful returns to the mix as well. Who knew blast beats and serene atmospheres went together to perfectly? Every single song on this album is a cinematic journey through space, with uplifting moments as well as depressing moments that are portrayed so well within the music itself, this could be entirely instrumental and the emotion would still be the same.
There is so much emotion and grace poured into “.- -… … . -. -.-. .”, it really shows on each track too. Every single song has it’s purpose and each song, while being very similar, has it’s own story to tell and it’s very involved and interesting to dive into each time I press play. The only track that breaks up the usual flow of the album is the 4th track, which is more like a subtle piece of music used for an intermission. After that though, the 5th and 6th track continue on the album as if nothing happened at all.
All in all, it’s a beautiful black metal album (never thought I would say that) with ultra strong atmospheric presence. If you like cosmic atmospheric music, especially in the black metal genre, then Mesarthim have what you are looking for. For this being only their 2nd full length, they have a lot going on for them. The musical theme may be narrow (space….yay…) but there is a vastness to the open universe and Mesarthim somehow captures those feelings in musical form. Put on “.- -… … . -. -.-. .” and drift away.
