Ah. December. The time of year when all music related websites are putting up their favorite albums of 2016. I am going to be releasing my 2016 black metal list here on December 26th, as well as other lists on Headbang or GTFO. I have honestly been just listening to previous albums non stop for the past 2 weeks and have not listened to anything new, that is why I did not post a From The Void last week. However, I want you all to get involved and tell me what YOUR favorite releases are of 2016. It can be genre specific or wide open. I would love to hear what your favorite releases of 2016 are. Leave a comment below and tell me which albums are your favorite and let’s start a discussion on the music of the year shall we? I’ll get started with 1 or 2 below.
Chicago atmospheric metallers Varaha have announce that they will release their self-titled debut EP later this month on December 16. Recorded by Nick Morgan and Mike Lust (Urge Overkill, Russian Circles, et al) and mixed and mastered by Adam K. Stilson (Airiel, Car Seat Headrest, et al) at Decade Music Studios, the EP is comprised of three tracks and includes guest appearances by Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Corrections House, Brain Tentacles et al) on saxophone and Josie Boyer (Round Rock Symphony Orchestra) on cello.
Crystal Fairy (Melvins, Le Butcherettes, Mars Volta) have premiered a new track from their forthcoming self-titled album via Pitchfork. The new track is titled “Chiseler” and it rushes out of the gate with barreling, drop-tuned riffage and Teri Gender Bender’s soaring and commanding vocals. Teri Gender Bender offered the following comments to Pitchfork about the track:
Grindcore supergroup Lock Up (Napalm Death, Brutal Truth, etc) have released a new track from their highly-anticipated new album, Demonization, which is due out in March 2017 via Listenable Records. The new track is titled “Mindfight” and features two blistering minutes of unadulterated grinding fury. Demonization will be the first record from the outfit to feature Brutal Truth‘s Kevin Sharp handling vocal duties, and his aggressive howl makes a grand appearance on this new cut. Check out the track after the break.
Georgian chaotic hardcore outfit Dying Whale have premiered a new track from their upcoming album, Last Moments of Misery, at New Noise Magazine. Titled “One Final First Kiss”, the track is a maelstrom of sludgy grit and angular riff salad that builds into a dismal piano-led bridge, and further into a soul-sucking climax. Bassist/vocalist Matt Zagorski said of the track:
New York City’s Black Anvil have premiered the title track to their forthcoming full-length album, As Was, via Clrvynt. The sprawling, nearly seven-minute amalgam of modern doom and black metal trudges along like a towering behemoth, but never skimps on melody or surprisingly tranquil passages. Check out the track after the break.
As Was will be released on January 13, 2017 via Relapse Records. Pre-order here.
