For whatever my opinion is worth (which probably isn’t much), I think this year has been quite an incredible one for heavy music. Some long-awaited returns, some exceptional grind, some progressive masterpieces, and some pretty substantial EPs, to say the least. Here are my top 20 picks for the best releases of 2016.
As with every other music blog or publication, we at Svbterranean are obligated to give you our silly opinions on what were the top albums of the year. I could list every single release I enjoyed this year, but I am limited on patience and writing ability. So, I was able to narrow it down to a modest 30. These are records that, not limited to just metal and hardcore either, that stuck with me long after the initial listen. Feel free to peruse the list below and tell me how my opinion is bullshit, because I will probably agree with you.
It’s crazy that it’s been a year since American Aftermath called it quits and Lane ushered Svbterranean into the world. I’ve listened to a metric fuck-ton of music this year and it’s been brilliant. 2016 was a magical time for music of all sorts. I’m not even gonna lie, Adele’s 25 was on my list until the last minute because it was just increible. I also want to throw some whoop-whoops towards Deathspell Omega, Ion Dissonance and Zeal And Ardor. All of them and many, many more released mind-blowing records this year, and they all fell off towards the end. How about we kick this thing off, eh? Continue Reading
It’s been another solid year within metal, especially black metal. One of my favorite genres, we see a return of some well known names within the realm of black metal as well as some fresh names here for 2016. One thing I noticed was the return of just pure blackened punishment in terms of screams, sacrilegious riffing and blasting that never seem to stop. Then for you fans of a more atmospheric black metal, we had plenty to choose from this year and it didn’t matter if you preferred a specific style (space, fantasy, nature, etc) because the choices were seemingly endless. Out of the hundreds of thousands of releases that came to be this year, the following 10 are definitely my favorite. Just like I do for “From the Void“, I will be linking to each bands Bandcamp or YouTube stream. Enjoy and thank you for a great year.
The Body – No One Deserves Happiness
With the release of I Shall Die Here and their slew of recent collaborations, The Body has somehow gotten even more experimental with their already experimental style of noise/metal/whatever by straying into catchier, even poppier territory. The interesting combination of noisy, yet highly structured songwriting as well as frequent collaborator Chrissy Wolpert’s sung vocals mixing with Chip King’s signature distorted howls in the background reinforces that feeling of genres intermingling, but also creates something new and original.
