It’s crazy that it’s been a year since American Aftermath called it quits and Lane ushered Svbterranean into the world. I’ve listened to a metric fuck-ton of music this year and it’s been brilliant. 2016 was a magical time for music of all sorts. I’m not even gonna lie, Adele’s 25 was on my list until the last minute because it was just increible. I also want to throw some whoop-whoops towards Deathspell Omega, Ion Dissonance and Zeal And Ardor. All of them and many, many more released mind-blowing records this year, and they all fell off towards the end. How about we kick this thing off, eh?
26. Septa – Sounds Like Murder
25. Heirophant – Mass Grave
24. Pity Sex – White Hot Moon
23. Knocked Loose – Laugh Tracks
22. Can’t Swim – Death Deserves A Name
21. Darkthrone – Arctic Thunder
20. The Dillinger Escape Plan – Dissociation
19. Vermin Womb – Decline
18. Wormrot – Voices
17. Emma Ruth Rundle – Marked For Death
16. Ruinous – Graves Of Ceasless Death
15. Weekend Nachos – Apology
14. Funeral Chic – Hatred Swarm
13. Colombian Necktie – All Paths Lead to Nothing
12. Anagnorosis – Peripeteia
11. Balance And Composure – Light We Made
Now we bust into the top 10. These are the albums that have had the most play for me personally this year. Some of these were incredibly late breaking, but I feel they sit in the exact right spot for me.
10. Nails – You Will Never Be One Of Us
—Nails are a band that I can never get enough of. Apparently a load of people weren’t feeling this album, but I’m into it. Is it Unsilent Death? Hell nah, but it’s still punishing.
9. Planes Mistaken For Stars – Prey
—The triumphant return of Planes Mistaken For Stars was something I was highly anticipating and the bands first new material in ten years definitely did not disappoint. PMFS always go above and beyond.
8. Trap Them – Crown Feral
—It probably isn’t a surprise to see Trap Them on my list, as they are one of my all time favorite bands and while I enjoyed Blissfucker, Crown Feral pushes the limit and kicks a hell of a lot of ass. Fast. Furious. Blistering.
7. Gatecreeper – Sonoran Depravation
—After a self-titled EP and a radical split with Young And In The Way, burst onto the scene with their debut album and took me by storm. This is the death metal-charged hardcore that we need.
6. Touche Amore – Stage Four
—Oh my god. This album is an emotional roller coaster. I mean, from start to finish, it’s heartbreaker, but it’s all so beautiful. This is the album that made me cry this year and made me experience feelings I haven’t gotten from an album in a long time.
And now into the top 5! Onward!
5. Clipping. – Splendor And Misery
—This fucking record. Woah. An incredible story begins and ends with this record and is spectacularly executed by Daveed and his brilliantly spit words. The music is odd as well as oddly satisfying. I wish I had listened to Lane when he told me to look into this group before, but luckily I discovered it before it was too late.
4. Oathbreaker – Rheia
—Oathbreaker are ALWAYS amazing. Anyone who tells you otherwise just doesn’t get it. Rheia is a stunning soundscape that harnesses emotion and frustration as well while producing some of the nastiest tracks of their career.
3. Zao – A Well-Intentioned Virus
—I fell out of touch with Zao after their 2004 album The Funeral Of God. That album is landmark and I still love it. When I got jumped back into Zao on this new record, I was taken back twelve years and blown away. So good.
2. Nothing – Tired Of Tomorrow
—Nothing have been a band that, for me at least, has gotten progressively better album to album. Their material is always strong, but Tired Of Tomorrow is a stuning pusuit by these shoegaze wizards. So fucking rad.
1. Sex Prisoner – Tannhauser Gate
—And here we are. My number one album of the year was a late addition that quickly arose through the ranks and made its way snugly into my top five and finally nestled itself at my number one spot. This band has taken me by storm recently. Before Tannhauser Gate, I was familiar with the band, but this album has changed me. Sex Prisoner is magic in a filthy, crusted powerviolence shell. Get into it.
