In the last few years, emo has made a huge comeback. One of my favorite bands currently perfecting the genre is Del Paxton. The band released a phenomenal EP titled Worse. Summer. Ever. back in 2013 and a split with Gulfer last year. The band will unleash their highly anticipated debut LP in March and I know I am beyond stoked. I recently conducted a short interview with Dylan England about the bands name, their upcoming album and plans for the new year. Check it out below.
First off, can I just say that That Thing You Do! is one of my favorite flicks and Tom Hanks is my favorite actor. Whose idea was it to pick Del Paxton as the bands name?
The band name came from our drummer, Greg. He is also a huge fan of the movie and was really pushing for the name. Zack and I came up with terrible pun names that were only funny to us, so we went with Del Paxton. So yeah, thank you Greg!
You guys will release their debut album “All Day, All Night, Every Day” in March, which is being met with loads of excitement. Can you tell me a bit about the album? Inspiration, writing, anything.
“All day, Every day, All night” was most inspired by the landscape of upstate and western New York. All three of us grew up here and have lived here ever since. Many of the songs on this record are about that. I like writing about my own personal everyday experiences. Car rides, walks, phone calls, mundane things like that. I guess more general themes on the record would be memory, seasons, addiction and loss.
The emo resurgence in the last few years is a thing of beauty. There was a time when some would consider the genre dead. Did you ever feel this way?
I love 90’s emo and I’ve always gravitated toward riffy guitar based punk stuff. In fact Greg and Zack and I have only ever played that kind of music. So…yeah its great being able to release our music with Topshelf and see other bands like us do the same.
What’s up next for Del Paxton? Will there be any touring in 2017 and onward?
Up next in 2017 for us is our release show (March 3rd) in Buffalo then we’ll play some shows, tour, write, etc.
2016 has been a god-awful year for people of note, that’s for sure. We’ve lost Prince, David Bowie and many, many more. Are these indeed the end times?
Yes. Our president is a fucking neo nazi reality TV star.
I have to do the cliche “four desert island records” question because I am legitimately interested in what you’d pick.
Mock Orange – “Nines and Sixes”
Third Eye Blind – “s/t”
The Snake The Cross The Crown – “Cotton Teeth”
Fire When Ready – “As the Sky Stared Down With Angry Clouds”
