Saille is a symphonic black metal band from the region of Belgium and their newest release Gnosis is a rather interesting album of avant-garde meets mild symphonic black metal melodies and compositions. The music maintains a dark image on Gnosis and carefully adds the keys/synth/symphonic moments without over doing it and coming off as cheesy or cliche.
Saille‘s approach on this album, musically, is an even flow of melody, blackened hostilities within riffs, treacherous screams and level headed drum work that delivers both on the groove side as well as the heavy side with plenty of fast paced double bass patterns to keep things interesting. The guitars have a bite to them with a raspy and crunchy tone. Bass is rich and thick without drowning out anything as it’s being played. The mix and levels on Gnosis is done incredibly well.
Song writing is actually quite enthralling. It’s a roller coaster of transitions, tempos, atmosphere and energies. No song quite stood out as “the best” or “most memorable” because they all have some unique qualities about them in some form or another. However, I will say that the further you dive into Gnosis, the more it seems that Saille grows with intensity with their song writing. Half way through, songs “Before the Crawling Chaos” and “Prometheus” really start to stand out and energy begins to flow really well.
It’s very rare that symphonic styled black metal catches my ear these days but Saille really did a great job with their use of the symphonic sections. It’s rather necessary and the compositions used along side the bands instrumentation is rather telling and beautiful. It doesn’t diminish from the overall sound being emitted from Saille here on Gnosis and it’s an experience I haven’t adventured through in quite some time. I didn’t know what to expect once I pressed play as the email sent to me described them as “epic black metal”, which I think is an entirely different sound altogether (Caladan Brood, Emyn Muil, etc) but this symphonic black metal act known as Saille is definitely something you should try out. Give Gnosis a listen to!
