If any of you have followed my career as a journalist, you know that my warm gooey center is made up of vicious hardcore. I love emo, black metal and things of the ilk, but I will never not love hardcore. That’s why when I got word that Xibalba were releasing a new album, I pre-ordered it the first chance I got. Sure, while it’s only three songs, it’s clearly not enough brutality, but any new Xibalba is good Xibalba, amirite?
“Diablo, Con Amor… Adios” is the latest from California’s powerhouse Xibalba. These guys never play around when it comes to their breakdown-laden, downtuned hardcore. It’s always a thundering beast and always enjoyable. The three songs that make up this EP are no exception and while they all bear Xibalba’s signature, they are a bit different also.
The first track “Diablo” is a slow, steady, and crushing beast which lends itself to sludgy power more than anything while “Con Amor…” takes an insane thrust forward into more of a straight forward death metal track. Much faster than the albums opener, and perhaps even more fierce. The final track “Adios” blends a little of the first two tracks and does it so fucking well. This right here is classic Xibalba and it is punishing. With this being the EP’s longest track, you get plenty of phenomenal hardcore for your buck.
There is no going wrong with this band and I hope this EP means there is more new tunes on the horizon. Bring me more Xibalba. Love this 7″.
