So, a while back this idea came up within the ranks of Svbterranean. The idea was to post about three albums that some would consider guilty pleasures. Well, most of us came to the conclusion that we don’t really have any records that we feel guilty about liking. So how about some albums that people give us shit for? I considered putting Lana Del Rey and Slipknot on this list, but I adore Lana and don’t listen to Slipknot enough for it to qualify. So here we go.
Also, I want to qualify by saying that these are all records I actually own in my collection. Photographic proof to follow.
My first album is Make Yourself by Incubus. Yeah, yeah. I’ve gotten a lot of shit for this one. What can I say? This record (along with Morning View) holds a special place in my heart. It’s fun, it’s catchy and it’s thoroughly enjoyable. Do I feel bad for liking this record? Nah. Like I said, Incubus where there in a very interesting point in my life. I dig it and if you don’t, fuck it. More for me.
Next up is Opus Eponymous by Ghost. Now, to be fair I have loved this album since it was first released. I thought it was fun and catchy. Ghost are campy, goofy and ridiculous. This is the only record by Ghost that I care anything about. Everything after this was uninteresting and boring. It was just Opus Eponymous through a lamer filter. I don’t feel bad for loving this because it’s still as fun and goofy as it was when I first heard it. Rad.
The final album is 100% the album I get the most shit for. The Carter IV by Lil Wayne was an interesting choice for sure. Why? Because I legitimately love some of the songs on here. Is the whole thing a winner? Nah. But “How To Love,” “How To Hate” and “President Carter” are all dope. There are some others, but those are definite listens every time. I am often mocked for this album, especially since not only do I own it, I own the deluxe edition on transparent red vinyl. Do I win? Probably not, but I likes.
And those are the records I am mocked for. Na-na-na-na-naaaah.
