Who the hell is Au-Dessus? They are a post-black metal band hailing from Lithuania. This debut album kinda takes from what Numenorean did with their album art from “Home”, just featuring a dead little blonde girl, this time not as gruesome as it looks like a fake picture. Nonetheless, as the father of a little blonde girl, these images are already hard for me to take in. However, this isn’t a review about how much of a pussy I am, I am here to discuss the music within. Being labeled as post-black, I figured it would have featured more of an emphasis on the post metal aspect….however what I get from “End of Chapter” is absolutely dreadful and dark music, with black metal and post metal sprinkled here and there.
Let me discuss each individual instrument before getting into the music as a whole. Guitars: the tone used here is deep and heavy, yet they have a mystical touch about them when the “post” style of music shows itself within a song. The bass guitar is blended quite perfectly here within the riffs and provides a strong backbone and structures the flow of each song beautifully. This is a great example of masterful musicianship here and we haven’t even talked about the percussive and vocal aspects of this release.
Drums here are spectacular! Fills, fills, rhythmic bliss, fills, technical bits, blasts and everything else you could want with your black metal. The drums heard here are not aiming to blast you to death with vicious speeds, but to be a powerhouse of rhythm along side the already great guitar and bass riffs.
Vocal work on “End of Chapter” is also damn good and fits with the music very well. Giving me a good Schammasch vibe in a way. Au-Dessus’ ability to impress on all aspects of artistry is mind blowing considering it’s 2017 and I honestly thought I had heard it all. Au-Dessus takes everything I love about modern black metal and blends it into a well crafted album…and this is their debut!!!
A must listen, a must have album for you black metal lovers out there. One truly dark wave of sounds and emotions. One of the better black metal releases of 2017. Au-Dessus is going to create a grand name for itself and “End of Chapter” is only the beginning!
