Dayton, OH experimental post-metal band Close the Hatch have announced the release of their upcoming six-track EP, titled VI, this September. The follow-up to their 2016 Death & Resistance EP is set to progress the band’s sound to the next level, with sludgier rhythms and more ambient tones incorporated into their intensely heavy, doom-laden style.
In anticipation of the new release, Close the Hatch are offering up an exclusive taste of the EP right here on Svbterranean, with a video for the track “II.” The song comprises nearly five minutes of abrasive riffs, combined with dark, droning dissonance and harsh vocals, while the accompanying video was filmed/directed by Josh Gwin and features the band jamming out in a warehouse space. Check it out after the break, along with the artwork and track listing for VI.
Vocalist/guitarist Stephen T. Barton tells Svbterranean:
“The song is basically me convincing myself that in life I have no choice but to over come negative things happening around me and block out the what ifs in doing so as they are irrelevant.”
According to Barton, the entire EP is centred around the theme of rebuilding following catastrophe or low points in one’s life. VI was recorded at Encore studios in Dayton, OH and is the first recording written collaboratively as a band in Close the Hatch‘s six years.
VI is being self-released on September 29 via Barton’s own label, Red Moth LLC. Watch the video for “II” below and stream/download the track here. Also check out Volume One of our Summer of Sludge compilation featuring the title track from VI here.
