Nashville technical blackened death metal act Enfold Darkness is finally releasing a follow up to 2009’s debut album. I don’t what exactly took them so long but I assume that it was nearly 8 years of fine song writing, so I dive head first into “Adversary Omnipotent” with unrealistically high expectations, wanting to hear what could possibly be one of the best albums of the year. Will Enfold Darkness let me down? I seriously doubt it. At least I hope not…
One of my favorite things that any band could ever do is create a story/narrative and lore with their music and Enfold Darkness does just that on their new album. Pulled straight from PR:
Adversary Omnipotent is built from an original story the band created: For 100,000 years, Na’ak Ba’ran has dominated the affairs of Et through the Narcillians, it is the age of the king (k’thran’ithul. Through his communion with the fallen God, the descendants of the Sali’un, whose destiny is to restore the ancient ways of his people.
As he delves into the mysteries of the ancient gods, the Ultimate Truth is gifted to him. Though, it is not what he had bargained for…
Now I have no freaking clue what is happening here as it’s a vague opening statement of what is happening on this album but I would read this book in a heartbeat. The story is formulated and told throughout the 67 minutes of technical death metal being played on Adversary Omnipotent. The vast and rich song writing is absolutely well done. Vocals ranges you get a little low end but it’s mostly mid ranged screaming over the guitar riffs. Drumming is just as what you would want from this style of music. Production values on the drums are good and the levels are meshed well within the rest of the instruments. Bass guitar is carefully blended in the rear of all of the sounds, adding a nice thump to the flow of the music. Every once in awhile you will hear the bass guitar go off and it’s a nice treat for your ears.
Guitar tone is rad, it’s not thin but not over doing it within the bass department. The sound is perfect for this style of technical attack on the guitar. All n all, we have what seems to be the best technical/progressive death metal release of the year and that is quite a bold statement, I know. I’m having a really hard time finding flaws on this album and am truly enjoying every single song on this album.
So not only are we getting story and beautiful musicianship, it looks as if we are getting genuine creative originality. With the high energy being pushed from this band, I am honestly just enamored from what is being unleashed from Enfold Darkness‘ sophomore release. There is a familiarity about it but there is also just something so fresh and enjoyable about this album. This could quite easily be one of the more important album releases this year for a couple of reasons. It’s top notch music on all levels and it’s honestly just fun to listen to. A tasteful blend of technical death metal, progressive death metal and blackened death metal, Adversary Omnipotent is an absolute must listen.
