PUNCTURE– Form and Void
Puncture deliver a quick but aggressive (around 22 minutes) of dark, aggressive hardcore. Aggressive in nature, fully formed in its anger, this band delivers 8 tracks, with the majority being around 2 minutes in length, one at 4 minutes, and an opening track at 48 seconds (thank you noise and soundscapes.) The tracks hit the nuts and grab the jugular, always being fast and brutal, angry and pissed (check out the tacks “Wolfspit” and “Skinwalker”) for the average song type. This is reminiscent of bands like Cursed where there is the single string and monotonous runs that just work. It kicks the teeth hard and do not let up for a second. You like Cursed? You like dark, metallic hardcore that is pissed? Get this shit. It is spot on and will make you feel the warmth from the hate building up inside.

Ancst, which means “angst”, hail from Berlin, Germany, and seem to have a pretty decent following due to relentless touring, multiple releases and a work ethic that harbors on furious. They have 3 albums according to their Bandcamp page, and this is the newest EP to come out, entitled Furnace. They claim to be a mixture of black metal and hardcore, and it shows. Their music is fast and furious, showing off the definite pieces of musicality that make these genres, especially black metal (you like double bass and blast beats and tremolo picking?). This music is good, with the musicianship being up there in the technical/I-wish-I-could-be-that-good-type of technique (mental note: practice more), but can lead in to monotony after a while, turning into a barrage of white noise. I like it, but it is something to keep in to the car and randomly put in when driving because of the (blast) beats. There is something there but it is needs to be refined. The band site says it is more melodic album, so maybe they are adding a new sound, but man…it needs to get there. They are on the right path, and I hope that they can hit the right tremolo picked notes, and look forward to the progression. Until then, you stay in the CD case for most of the week until the 45 minute drive comes and I need to stay awake. Did I mention there were blast beats?
