A nice blend of black metal, hard rock, doom/sludge and what appears to be a nu-metal/metalcore mashup is in store for you today with these albums.
Contra – Deny Everything
Contra is a loud and proud video game about shooting the shit out of everything in sight and was released over 30 years ago. Wait that has nothing to do with this band, with the same name and same logo. Plagiarism doesn’t scare these guys! Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, these guys pump out slushy grooves that your drunk uncle will enjoy! Music is as metal as the aluminum walls of your trailer and the vocals remind me of your step brother on drugs. It’s not too bad but you can’t deal with it for too terribly long. Guitar work is nice but I’m not into the vocals.
Schammasch – The Maldoror Chants: Hermaphrodite
Man last year’s Triangle by Schammasch was a ‘schmasch’ hit with black metal fans. Ending up on many end of the year lists and being played in my household over and over. The band drops this “short” release of 7 (6…”Prologue” is a waste of time) tracks upon us and it’s wildly different. Focusing on atmosphere and spoken words, this sounds more like an artistic atmospheric doom album rather than their brand of black metal. I guess there is a reason no one has really been talking about this album. It’s okay but nothing special is going on here.
Nuclear Oath – Toxic Playground
An interesting looking album art with relating their sound to Pantera, Slipknot and Mudvayne was quite scary from the beginning. Against my better judgement I tried out the music and it’s more along the lines of Pantera meets God Forbid. A thin production value with solid riffs and vocal work really comes together nicely to form good genuine metal songs. These guys just want to make you headbang and there are some headbang worthy tracks on here. Not bad!
Norska – Too Many Winters
Norska delivers a weird, abrasive rendition of what sludge/doom should be. Reminding me of YOB (well duh), Mastodon and something similar to what High on Fire would do, but with their own twist on each style. It’s fun, new and familiar at the same time. Raunchy with a side of whiskey…..and yer toes will tap and yer neck will move. Very good stuff here.
