NYC-based “immigrindcore” band Chepang (originally from Kathmandu, Nepal) are set to release their debut LP, titled Dadhelo – A Tale of Wildfire, this November. The follow-up to their 2016 Lathi Charge EP takes their vicious, politically-charged grind approach to a whole other level of intensity, with the introduction of a second drummer.
In anticipation of the upcoming album, Chepang are offering up a taste of the release right here on Svbterranean, with a video for the track “Bech Bikhan.” The song is less than a minute worth of sheer sonic chaos, while the video captures the recording process, showcasing the band’s two drummers performing and recording simultaneously. Check it out after the break.
Chepang documented as much of the recording process as possible, and the video for “Bech Bikhan” is part of another short video about the experience that will be released at a later date. Dadhelo – A Tale of Wildfire was recorded and mixed by Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations Studio in Baltimore, MD, with assistant engineer Yave Rust, and it was mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.
Guitarist Kshitiz Moktan (AKA Captain Bhudey) discusses the album’s themes with Svbterranean:
“Dadhelo basically in Nepali means wildfire. If you closely listen to the album, the songs are very loose. It’s a free form of music over blast beats that hits you like the wildfire. Wild and out of control without any boundary. The lyrics revolve around us as humans where we are basically creating groups and boundaries in where we want to live and why it is adversely affecting us. Borders, concrete buildings, industry etc. Chepang who have been living off of the caves and jungles in Nepal for centuries is one of the victims of this so-called creation which serves as the character in these songs.
In fact there is a phrase we use all the time – #weareallchepang which is actually true. Look around we are all the same as Chepang, ready to get burnt by the wildfire that will come in the form of a nuclear holocaust war or some natural calamities. Get ready to be extinct soon.
The song ‘Bech Bekhan’ is a question to the individual self and rethinking/analyzing why we think and are acting the way we do. Why is my life so miserable? Why am I the sheep? Where is my vision? Why am I selling myself? Why am I following some rules and selling my identity and my individuality?”
