In the few short years that Ecliptic Vision has existed, they’ve quickly climbed to the top of upstate NY’s totem pole through hard work, killer live shows, and finely crafted tunes celebrating all there is to love about extreme metal. Following up last year’s debut, Dissimilar Dimensions, their new EP Omphalos Of The Void, is a level up in every sense, showcasing everything the band has learned in the time between with a tighter, more mature, melodic sound that doesn’t compromise on the paranormal fueled brutally that made them so goddamn awesome to begin with.
Across Omphalos’ four tracks the combination of old school brutality (with just a pinch of thrashiness) combine with modern grooves to expose a cross-section of contemporary extreme music not without its own sense of identity.
Starting with a bit of sci-fi spookiness, the first track, “Consumed By Fire,” exhibits the stronger structural sensibilities the band is using this time around as it phases into existence, blasting the listener with dissonant leads interwoven with tight groove action. Track two, “Aberration,” ups the complexity with some tasty melodies as the guitarist slides up and down the fretboard supported by a solid wall of percussion thunders from beyond the abyssal veil. The band’s songwriting chops reach a high point with “Rage Ablaze,” giving us lower organisms a glimpse of what these guys have in store in the future.
The vocal performance across the EP is solid and dynamic, alternating between slammy gurgling lows and banshee highs that wouldn’t sound out of place on an Enslaved record. The closer, “Crimson River,” finishes things off strong with a chorus section that had me fighting the urge to pump my fist during my crowded morning commute.
As their talent continues to develop and the sheer drive of Ecliptic Vision sees them propelled beyond Syracuse and into the wider world I have no doubt that this gruesome foursome will be coming to a town near you with bigger and brutaler tunes before too long.
