In SVB Halloween Theater, we asked various musicians and fellow bloggers to talk about some of their favorite horror films.
Ross Bradley – God Root
Parents is basically like if David Lynch made a schlocky cannibal movie starring the shitty hillbilly cousin from Christmas Vacation. It’s a genuinely unnerving and surreal look at fucked up middle-class suburban culture but it has this really colorful camp horror vibe about it. Super creepy and dreamy and stylish. Really can’t recommend enough.
Brainscan isn’t a perfect movie but it hits me square center in the 90’s horror nostalgia. It looks like a really bizarrely violent Goosebumps episode. It’s full of (seemingly) parentless kids running around on crunchy leaves, wearing tons of red flannels, and a plot that hamfistedly taps into violent video game hysteria. This movie is essentially the same plot as Trick Or Treat (The incredible 1987 one with Gene Simmons and Ozzy) but instead of a haunted heavy metal record we have a haunted video game that causes its player TO KILL. Also the soundtrack has OLD and TAD and White Zombie and George Clinton so I don’t know what the fuck you’re waiting for.
Truth Or Dare: A Critical Madness (1986)
I wanted to include at least one no-budget trip into madness and next to “Things” and “Science Craze” (Go watch those) this is my absolute favorite. I can’t even explain the tone of this fucking movie. Just watch the trailer. The plot is nearly non-existent and will repeatedly thrust you years into the future to get to the next insane set piece. If I had to sum it up- it’s like if Falling Down was made by a young Peter Jackson. This whole thing culminates in the most bat-shit incredible 3rd act of all time.
