I was fortunate enough to witness the very first night of the Bloodletting North American XI Tour but I need to state something right away: I missed the opening acts of Torn the Fuck Apart (a Kansas City technical brutal death metal act), The Kennedy Veil (Technical brutal death metal from Sacramento) and Dyscarnate (Death metal from the UK) as life just happened. Quick note: Visceral Disgorge was not able to make it to the Kansas City date for some reason, so obviously I didn’t get to see them either. When I arrived at the Riot Room (finally), I just happened to get there as Unmerciful was setting up the stage and doing a quick sound check. The lights dimmed a little and the band readied it’s onslaught unto the crowd.
Unmerciful are a Technical/Brutal death metal act from Topeka, KS, and being able to catch them in a live act was an amazing thing. The band churns out wicked groove and technicality at great speeds and sounds absolutely gnarly live. The perfect amount of tech with viscous amounts of groove, Unmerciful plays catchy death metal that gets your head whipping and the mosh pit going. I really liked their set and you need to make sure to catch them.
Up next was the brutal death titans known as Defeated Sanity and I was ready to fucking throw the fuck down to some slamming brutal death riffs but I did not get the memo because this iteration of the band was focused only on performing the progressive songs the band recently released on their latest album. So if you’re expecting “Psalms of the Moribund“, “Chapters of Repugnance” or “Passages into Deformity” songs then you will be sorely disappointed, as I was. If you are purely wanting “Dharmata” progressive death metal then you will enjoy this show. I was a little pissed off though.
Next up was the band I was looking forward to the most. Archspire opened their set with “Calamus Will Animate“, which is a rapid fire song with insane lyric spitting right from the get go. The band comes in along side Oliver and the energy and execution of EVERYONE involved is laser tight and utterly amazing to experience. Archspire are one of the tightest bands out there right now who nail every single note just as they do on their albums. The band plays a healthy set of songs from the new album as well as their older material. Do not miss this act!
Lastly, ORIGIN setup their stage to make it look bad ass and ripped through their set with high velocity and aggression. Playing many older favorites in their set as well as new tracks from their new album “Unparalleled Universe“, the band played a powerful set with dynamic lightning and sound, showcasing what this band can truly do with an hour of time in a small venue. Bringing the Bloodletting show to a close, the energy didn’t stop until the final note was played. The crowd was tame compared to what I’ve seen in the past with Origin, but I think that may be due to the smaller size of the pit area. People jumped off the stage and did some crowd surfing, all at the will of Jason, who encourages that kind of behavior, not that there is anything wrong with it. Origin is a fun band to see and extremely talented, a wonderful combination for a good show!
If you can make it, go to the Bloodletting North America XI Tour!!! It’s a great night for death metal!
