Drowning the Light are one of those underground black metal acts that is well known within the community. Constantly releasing new material in some form since its inception, Drowning the Light really didn’t click with me until the release of 2015’s “From the Abyss”, which catches your eye immediately with literally the best album art I’ve ever seen! The art alone sets the tone for what is lying in wait inside. Darkness. Evil. Mysterious.
Greeted with a somber yet chilling synth piece as soon as you press play. This style of music brings in what some people call an “epic black metal” vibe into the mix, fans of Summoning will appreciate this incorporated into the music. The black metal nature of this album is almost nothing that I have heard before. It has a certain raw vibe to it within its composition and production, giving it an authentic feeling. The use of the flute a few times is enchanting and your soul will absorb the magic happening.
From the Abyss is flowing with melody, cutting black metal riffs that have this ancient medieval emotion behind it, folk filled moments that can be keyboard driven and gives an feeling of exploration and wickedness. The biggest thing about From the Abyss are the levels of atmosphere that Drowning the Light puts into this album. The instrumentation used as well as the vocal remedies here are outstanding and you will simply fall in love with this dark album after only one listen…and you will want to replay this one as often as possible.
No breakdown of songs are needed for From the Abyss as each song is necessary for the ultimate ebb and flow of this album as a whole. Some songs are straight forward black metal, some are nice intermissions of synth and atmosphere. Together, Drowning the Light pieces carefully one of the best black metal albums.
