Man it was a phenomenal year for heavy music, wasn’t it? Even if you were just a fan of one single genre, there were enough options to keep you entertained throughout the entire year!!! I somehow managed to focus on death metal but also found some gems outside of extreme music, two of which you will find here. Also, another genre of music I focused more on was synthwave, damn I love that stuff! While I did enjoy some fam jams quite a bit in 2017, it’s a safe bet that none of that will be in this top 25. A lot of talent and wonderful albums dropped this year, I could have easily done a top 100 like I did a few years ago but I will spare you. I hope you enjoy and if you haven’t heard of some of these….make sure you listen to them!!!
25. Hour of Penance – Cast The First Stone
24. Goatwhore – Vengeful Ascension
23. Full of Hell – Trumpeting Ecstasy
22. Contrarian – To Perceive Is To Suffer
21. Hideous Divinity – Adveniens
20. Origin – Unparalleled Universe
19. Broken Hope – Mutilated and Assimilated
18. The Contortionist – Clairvoyant
17. Mastodon – Emperor of Sand
16. Primitive Man – Caustic
15. Belphegor – Totenritual
14. Signs of the Swarm – The Disfigurement of Extinction
13. Gutslit – Amputheatre
12. Artificial Brain – Infrared Horizon
11. Cytotoxin – Gammageddon
10. Septicflesh – Codex Omega
The blackened symphonic death metal act known as Septicflesh returned this year with another stellar album of well orchestrated blackened death metal with a full literal orchestra backing them. Everything about this album was great in terms of production, song writing and just simply catchy moments that will get stuck in your head!
9. Dying Fetus – Wrong One To Fuck With
Despite the album title being cringy as hell and the lame merch that came with it, Wrong One To Fuck With had some of the best song writing to come out of the band as well as some kick ass music videos. Dying Fetus’ return after a long hiatus from their last album was welcomed in my book, they made me grunt growl and headbang quite a bit this year with this banger of an album.
8. Rings of Saturn – Ultu Ulla
Coming back with their unique style of hyper technical deathcore, RoS delivered it right this time with Ultu Ulla. Their last album was a sleeper in my book but this album delivered to all my needs quite nicely. Very fast guitar playing, vocals were better than ever, drumming was the best the band has ever seen and the song writing was just simply more enjoyable this time around.
7. Cut Up – Wherever They May Rot
If you love Exhumed but never heard of these guys then it’s time to change that right away. After falling in love with how crushingly heavy this album is on all fronts, nothing could really keep up in terms of old school death metal. The groove’s, the vocal delivery and just the ultimate power and flow of the album truly kicks my ass every single time. I listened to this album so damn much my wife even enjoyed it and she isn’t into death metal as much as I am. So play this for your closest mate and enjoy the gore that is Wherever They May Rot.
6. Decrepit Birth – Axis Mundi
I have never truly been THAT into Decrepit Birth but this album kicked me straight in the balls. Incredibly heavy, some of the best vocals laid down and quite simply it’s just well composed technical death metal. Production is crystal clean, the songs are very enjoyable and there is an element about this album that is hard to pinpoint or describe….but there is an atmosphere about this album that is thick and the guitars will lay down grooves to help exhibit this, as well as melt your face off with some technical jams.
5. Rendered Helpless – Entities of Transdimensional Emergence
Want your brutal death metal to go science fiction? Then choose this newest album by Rendered Helpless. The brilliantly bright and beautiful artwork pretty much tells you what is going on inside but your ears still won’t be truly ready for what lies within. Incredibly bassy production aside, the song writing is simple and heavy. They layout of the songs flow quite well and the vocals are just gnarly. One of my favorite brutal death metal albums of the year and you seriously need to listen to this right away.
4. Cannibal Corpse – Red Before Black
I even roll my own eyes at this choice within my top 5 but Red Before Black is undeniably good. It’s Cannibal Corpse doing Cannibal Corpse things and I still really really love that thing they do. They are heavy, consistent and always deliver a solid album. Their song writing always seems to get tighter and tighter the further they go. There are some shit stomping slow tracks on here as well as more thrashy fast tempo songs for you to whirlwind headbang to. A damn fine album.
3. Analepsy – Atrocities from Beyond
Simply the best brutal death metal in my eyes. The opening track alone is enough to cause an earthquake. The production, song writing, execution and performance is annihilation for sure. This album got constantly rotated (in my phone) and impressively enough never got old, even for a late January release! What Analepsy did here is devastating and you need to listen to this damn album right away.
2. Narcotic Wasteland – Delirium Tremens
Narcotic Wasteland has become one of my favorite death metal bands in the past couple of years and this release only solidified my love for them. If you somehow didn’t know, Dallas Toler-Wade is the frontman of this band and they kicked 2017’s ass…not only with this release but with a huge North American tour. Delirium Tremens does what their debut album did but with even tighter song writing, better production and relentless drumming. A treasure of thrashy, death metal riffing, lyrics I can relate to and vicious energy to convey the messages within.
1. Archspire – Relentless Mutation
The fastest lyrics ever spit. The fastest drumming performed. The fastest technical guitar playing shredded. Relentless Mutation took what Archspire is known for and just somehow improved on their maniacal formula of technical death metal. I friggin love this album and everything about it. The artwork, the production, the songwriting, the technical aspects of what all band members bring to the party and the crushing grooves that the band can unleash as well.
I was lucky enough to catch them live again this year and they nail each song on stage and it’s just as good as listening to the album, if not better. Archspire deserves to conquer this world and needs to get recognized, this album is a masterpiece! It’s an ear orgasm for sure and you must listen to this!
Thank you 2017, you kicked ass. Let’s go 2018!!!! Full speed ahead!
