Frost Giant is a folk/melodic death metal hybrid of energy and music inspired by Norse mythology. The Harlot Star is a confusing album of sorts due to the music being so damn good and serious to moments where they are clearly just goofing around and making silly tunes. Combine Alestorm, Ensiferum, Turisas together, mix them all up and add a dash of Volbeat and voila! You get The Harlot Star by Frost Giant! In all seriousness, The Harlot Star was an enjoyable listening experience. Brimming with great songwriting, good production and solid performances from everyone involved.
Vocals drift from singing to screaming throughout the album. The guitars are consistently creating an enriched experience of heavy metal, folk metal and melodic compositions. I previously mentioned goofy moments on the album but that seriously consisted of 1% of the musical experience here on The Harlot Star. Frost Giant delivers a promising melodic/folk metal journey that I wasn’t ready for.
The band is been releasing music for about 7 years up til this moment, where they finally release a debut album and the anticipation was well worth the wait. Frost Giant’s songwriting skills and execution on The Harlot Star took me by surprise. Cinematic moments that build and build, awesome hair whipping guitar solos and rolling drums really made this album “pop” and was not only fun to listen to but had a sense of “fuck yeah” to it as well. A proper melodic/folk metal album to start the year with. Definitely check this album out if you are into this genre!
