Mare Cognitum “returns” with a re-release of their debut album, “The Sea Which Has Become Known“, one of the more visceral atmospheric black metal releases ever unleashed upon the public ear. Usually when a band from this genre puts out a release, it fully emphasizes more on the layers of atmosphere and is typically slower in many aspects. Few bands can put forth a power drive and stay truly atmospheric…Darkspace comes to mind. However, cosmic and atmospheric is something Mare Cognitum does right and this album will also shred your face with raw guitars and vocals. After one full listen, I am hooked.
The beauty is definitely found within the atmospheres and whimsical guitar playing. There is also a nice touch of raw black metal within these compositions. Sole member of the band, Jacob Buczarski, commands the music and he delivers a wonderful experience this time around. Mare Cognitum has always been consistent with it’s sound and you can hear the evolution on “The Sea Which Has Become Known” and honestly I think the guitar work just pops. Vocals are raw and distant, bass lines are laid down and powerful, drum work is rather gnarly but the guitar work stands out, especially half way through the album during the song “Vehement Coalescence”, where the riffs and solo launch the music into another world. Combine these riffs with a more aggressive drum pattern and you have some great headbanging black metal to worship.
Revisit this album, it’s an absolute must for fans of the band and this genre. You can finally own this on disc/vinyl and get an updated album art to boot!
