Fucked and Bound crank out 20 minutes of no-holds-barred hardcore on their debut full-length, Suffrage.
In stark contrast to sister band He Whose Ox Is Gored, this Seattle quartet is all speed, grit and fury. Blending hardcore old and new with a dash of powerviolence and metallic hardcore, Fucked and Bound embrace the sound of the Seattle hardcore scene while showing off their own flair. In just 20 minutes’ time the band deliver 13 heavy-hitting tracks overflowing with seething angst, heightened by topics such as feminism and nihilism. It’s confrontational in the best way possible.
With the opening, 30-second rager “A Wild Thing”, Fucked and Bound waste no time in throttling the listener. This brief burst of hardcore viciousness cranks out a blur of venomous chords that stampede over a hectic rhythm section, bringing forth as much blood as possible. Vocalist Lisa Mungo’s throat-searing, absolutely pissed scream is at the heart of everything, adding an extra dimension of ferociousness. Mungo’s face-peeling vocal style spearheads the following track, “Get Inside”; a d-beat fueled, galloping punk anthem that pummels listeners into a pulp in a mere 90 seconds. Two tracks in and it is clear the band don’t want to pussyfoot around.
Tracks like “Zero Fucks” and “#GTFO” are gloriously straightforward, hammering punk anthems full of driving chords and memorable vocal refrains. These cuts scream of classic hardcore, but the band’s unique swagger is always below the surface. Other songs like “Dead Bop” and “Creeps On the Street” break the d-beat/power chord cycle by adding a bit of muscular groove to the mix. “Parasite Lost” also stands out from the pack with its array of gritty, angular riffs and flirtations with dissonance.
Everything is brought to the close on the monolithic final track, “Abuse of Registry”. This four-minute, beast of a track unleashes marching, sludge-ridden riffs that crush listeners relentlessly as an almost Unsane-esque bass line grumbles underneath. The track utilizes repetition just enough to drill the riffs into listeners’ minds, but switches it up every so often to avoid monotony. It’s a properly bludgeoning track to end a properly bludgeoning album.
Fucked and Bound‘s debut album is a solid hardcore recording that carves its own niche within the scene while embracing the genre’s lineage. It’s fast, angry and a bit chaotic at times. What more could hardcore fans want?
