Formed out of the ashes of avant-metal outfit Autocatalytica comes the chaotic hardcore/mathcore quintet Detach the Islands. Once a one-man project helmed by drummer and mastermind Emmett Ceglia, this Brooklyn-based act has since involved into a full-fledged band that collects several key players in the Brooklyn mathcore scene. Joining Ceglia in actualizing his vision are Jay Kohler (Juan Bond), Siddhu Anandalingam (Juan Bond), Eric Messihi (Cape Francis) and Ashley Levine (Mary Todd). Together they aim to create the most frenetic and complex noise they can.
On February 9, Detach the Islands are poised to release their new single, “Phantom in the Frame”. The track is the first fully collaborative track from the band and is the last to feature former bassist Tom Moretti and former vocalist Dan Kelly. The single will be released with three previously-released B-sides, which will collectively be released on cassette via Cryptic Carousel/Dental Records in the near future.
In preparation for its release, we at Svbterranean an exclusive stream of the single in question. “Phantom in the Frame” is a maddening display of rapidly shifting rhythms and earsplitting cacophony. The instrumentation frequently transitions from Dillinger-esque, off-kilter beatdowns, to blurs of dissonant, angular grind, to complete noise throughout. “This track is such a brutal, cathartic way to end our set every show, and it just grinds you down into dust,” says Ceglia.
