TOTALSELFHATRED is a Finnish band that, you guessed it, writes melancholic and depressing music. Their style lies on the black metal side of things which truly brings out the darkness in their content. The grim atmospheres on their new album, Solitude, portray their sorrows and self destruction, even without the vocals to convey these messages, the music itself is truly hopeless and heavy. Their 3rd full length release is a strong one and fans of this genre will enjoy this album quite a bit.
Solitude paints a dark image in my soul during the play through of the album in full, each song is a churning maelstrom of depression and anxiety. Yet, TOTALSELFHATRED also pumps the brakes on the darkness at times to play something melodic and beautiful, even if it’s still wildly depressing. This shift in emotive musical composition constantly has me by the throat and indulges me further into the abyss that is Solitude; something I can wrap my head around. The overall enjoyment I get out of this dreadful swamp of music is actually amazingly high, I absolutely love music like this as it feels so damn genuine and real. Depressive black metal is amazing and if you can relate to it, it’s the most powerful genre in the world. TOTALSELFHATRED gets this ideology and creates incredible music around it.
Each instrument plays a vital role on Solitude as TOTALSELFHATRED made sure that each one can be heard through it’s recording and production process. Acoustic guitars ring out and are absolutely beautiful. Bass guitar is not only audible but powerful and important. Guitars are layered at times and build a fantastic atmosphere. Adding to this atmosphere is the keyboard’s ability to add subtle nuances to the music. Lastly, vocals are done amazingly well. One thing about depressive black metal is the vocals can make or break the band or album, each style of screaming or growling (many members of this band perform vocals) is done really well and fits the music and narrative of the album perfectly. Production and sound is actually impressive for a release like this, usually bands go with a lo-fi or traditional black metal sound, which lacks bass or finely tuned production values. Solitude sounds amazing in every way possible.
Bravo to the gentlemen who created such a dark piece of art. TOTALSELFHATRED really delivers a strong album and definitely needs your attention. Be sure to listen to Solitude, buy the album and support this band.
