Machinist! – Closer to Death
Machinist! crank out 17 minutes of unforgiving dark hardcore on their newest recording, Closer to Death. Armed with both metallic hardcore grit and blackened sensibilities, this Georgian act deliver eight tracks of pure fury. The record begins explosively with the three-minute stunner “Without Rest”; a blistering track that weaves together crusty black metal stampedes and vitriolic beatdowns. This track paves the way for the subsequent one-two punch of “Ignorant Masterpiece” and “Empty Nests”. The former track issues a barrage of hellspawned riffs reminiscent of modern black metal with a punk heart beating underneath, while the latter track is a 40-second blitz of caustic guitars and hellish dissonance. Chaos continues to ensue in the second half of the record with tracks like “Living Curse” cycling between malevolent, spiraling licks and kick-your-teeth-in breakdowns. The all leads to the album’s closing and title track, which gradually evolves from trudging, dissonant hardcore to angular, frenetic madness. It’s not hard to come across a band that does the whole “blackened hardcore” thing, but it is difficult to find one, such as Machinist!, who do it uniquely.

Tetelestai – CRVSH SVTVN
With an arsenal of obtuse buzzsaw riffs and a handful of notable guest appearances at their disposal, Omaha’s Tetelestai deliver a chaotic noise fest on their debut EP, CRVSH SVTVN. Comprised of musicians Reid Otto and Christian Johnson, Tetelestai is a newer act whose sound harks back to the heyday of metalcore while simultaneously adding something unique to the mix. With the aid of guest contributions from Sean Ingram (Coalesce), Matt Beck (Spitfire) and Darren “DJ” Johnson (ex-Living Sacrifice), Tetelestai offer up a crushing debut that will appease longtime fans of the genre. The release kicks off with “The Dead We Do Not Mourn” (featuring Sean Ingram); a bestial track comprised of skull-shattering percussion and bludgeoning, serpentine grooves that gradually become more unhinged as time passes. “A Proper Exorcism // True Grit” (featuring Matt Beck) follows next with an unyielding barrage of massive, chugging guitars that seem to shake the earth with their overwhelming heaviness. “Preeminence Of” (featuring Darren Johnson) closes everything off on an off-kilter note with a volatile assault of angular, lurching grooves and earsplitting, disjunctive guitar acrobatics. All-in-all CRVSH SVTVN is a loud and abrasive debut and will hopefully be the first of many release from this Nebraska duo.
