Sludge-ridden black metallers Wolvhammer are poised to release their fourth full-length album, The Monuments of Ash & Bone, in just a matter of days. Following 2014’s Clawing into Black Sun, The Monuments of Ash & Bone continues to refine the band’s eclectic blend of black, sludge, doom and death metal. Featuring an endless array of bludgeoning grooves and blistering riffs, this seven-track record will not disappoint longtime fans of the band, nor will it disappoint lovers of all things dark and gritty in general.
In anticipation for the album’s release, we got in touch with vocalist Adam Clemens who agreed to reveal the meanings behind each of the album’s seven tracks. Check it out below.
1) Eternal Rotting Misery
This track is influenced by the idea of becoming a stronger individual through dealing with darker moments in life. It is my belief that a person becomes even more aware of their true selves when they are faced with something that threatens to destroy or corrupt their day to day lives or the psyche at large.
2) Call Me Death
The lyrics for this song go hand in hand with the first track but from an outsiders perspective. For example, someone who is aware that the “darker” moments of life shape a person just as much, if not more than the “light”, can be seen by an outsider as someone who dwells on themes such as death and misery and celebrates it, rather than acknowledging its existence/importance in this world and on the individual.
3) Law Of The Rope
As someone who deals with anxiety and depression this song is fairly straight forward about those themes. In times where anxiety can feel completely debilitating, the mind can descend into pure chaos, if you let it. This is the soundtrack to the feeling of the inevitable.
4) Bathed In Moonblood and Wolflight
This was written by the original lineup of Wolvhammer back in 2009 and was the first song I had heard from them. I always appreciated what Wolvhammer brought to the local music scene here in Minneapolis and I became a supporter right out of the gate. This is our tip of the hat to the original spirit of the beast.
5) The Failure King
There are times in life when the crushing feeling of inferiority becomes too much to bare. We, as humans, have to power to destroy AS WELL as create. It’s up to you as an individual to choose your path.
6) Dead Rat, Rotting Raven
Rats are considered animals of disease. Ravens in some cultures are used to symbolize intelligence. In the end, we all die. We all rot and we all become one with this world.
7) Solace Eclipsed
Accept your flaws and grow from them. Accept death as inevitability. Through that knowledge, let yourself become who you want to be. Do not accept alternatives. Do not let your inner solace become eclipsed.
The Monuments of Ash & Bone will be released on May 4 via Blood Music. Purchase here.
