Weaving together elements of garage, math, pop and indie rock with dashes of post-hardcore edge here and there, Fuck Your Birthday seem to be masters at all things catchy and eclectic. Comprised of Christopher Henry (guitars, vocals) and drummer Roman Meisenberg (drums, vocals), this West Virginia bred, NYC/Wenzhou, China-based duo are poised to release their infectious sophomore record, Maydays, on June 8 via Nefarious Industries. From the angular pop of “Afterlife” to the dreamlike passages of “Ho Chi Minh”, Maydays is a delightfully volatile half-hour rock record.
In anticipation for the album’s release, we at Svbterranean are happy to bring you an exclusive stream of the album’s opening track, “Cargo Shorts”. With its slow-burning verses, massive guitar chords, and earworm choruses, “Cargo Shorts” is what would happen if Weezer had more balls. Henry said the following of the track:
“‘Cargo Shorts’ is a song about the pains of having to grow up and be an adult. From co-workers pushing you to go to the bar and drink to try to feel like you’re still in university, to having to be responsible for paying bills, life is always hurling some shit at you. Some shit that would be easier to carry if you were still young and dumb enough to wear cargo shorts. No offense to people who still wear cargo shorts. This song clearly acknowledges their value. Haha.”
