’ESF’, or Expensive Swedish Furnishings, is a song about being so fucking bored that you go crosseyed and into a hallucination daydream. The being ‘stuck in the couch again’ part is a call to the cover of a Dinosaur Jr. record where it appears a couch is eating a human. It literally spawned from the most boring weekend in history, where I was seemingly unable to escape an overpriced IKEA you-build-it sofa. ‘All my friends are in my head’ is a play off of Nirvana’s ‘Lithium,’ except I couldn’t get ahold of any friends whereas Cobain found his….
‘Trains’ is about the cycles of dead-end life in a small city. Its an analogy to the way that people in this place, and indeed these types of places, allow themselves to be derailed by anger, addiction and the patterns created of the previous generations mistakes. ‘Life screaming like a bullhorn; bleeding’ and ‘Infectious breed disease’ are literal and figurative elements of the story for most of the inhabitants of this not-so-fictional place.
“Mindreader” is a tune about people who force the responsibility of their happiness onto other people. Sort of a call out to closed loop domestic microcosmic distress, if you will.
“Believer” is a rough little number about people who’s chosen life function is to create victimization scenarios for other people whilst they hide inside their own past sufferings as a proverbial faraday cage. It’s also a song about people who seemingly only want you to know that something bad happened to them, who will stop at nothing to ensure that you know that their past and present are way rougher and more valid than yours.
