Imperial Triumphant return with their 3rd full length release, a cinematic take on whatever genre this may be but I know it’s something great; Vile Luxury. It’s shockingly horrific, jazzy, exponential, aggressive and oddly intriguing to the point that you have to sit and do nothing else but digest exactly everything that Imperial Triumphant has done here. Blending melodies and terror of black metal and blending it with the unconventional sounds of technical death metal like Ulcerate, Artificial Brain and Gorguts, you get one seriously massive release. The dark jazzy elements added are just the tip of the iceberg. The listening experience of Vile Luxury is a hellish whirlwind of unstable melodies and unorthodox compositions. It’s divine.
Imperial Triumphant always seems to evolve little by little with each new release. I honestly don’t know how they will top this evolution on the next album unless they carefully just toss their instruments down an elevator shaft and record the noise that follow suit. As silly as that hypothetical situation may be, I bet Imperial could do that and pull it off somehow and call it existentialist technical blackened death metal. I digress, Vile Luxury is exactly what it is in a sense. Vile musicianship and wild writing with luxurious compositions on a roller coaster of progressive tempo changes and odd timing. Imagine a wildly unstable mental person with masterful understanding of music and how to arrange it all to make sense. That’s Vile Luxury.
All the metaphors in the world cannot prepare you for what this album is and what it does. It’s an absolute must listen event. Lucky for you, it’s out July 13th 2018 via Gilead Media, so the wait isn’t too rough. The music itself will make you think and it may bring out the philosopher out in the listener. What does it all mean? How is this so good? What makes it good? Will this forever change my perception on good music? This album isn’t even remotely catchy is the thing. It has its moments where the music is lined up in a cohesive manner of sorts, yet, for the most part the music is just oddly ascending and diminishing at the same time, toss in growling and blast beats and it’s all a messy situation. AND I CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF IT.
Things take a turn for the weird on the song “Chernobyl Blues”, where the music is heavily slowed down, drunkenly jazzy and still rather unsettling. The later part of the song, things stay weird yet the tempo and loud guitars/drums blow me away. It’s as if that same classy club I was just in was hit with a tornado. Wildly brutal, Imperial Triumphant brings together atmosphere and horror like never before. You will hear this time and time again on each song on throughout Vile Luxury.
Imperial Triumphant have unleashed an amazing abomination unto the world and we are oh so lucky to experience it. Vile Luxury is ungodly, beautiful, hectic and maddening. You have to listen to it. You have to listen to it immediately. You have to listen to this now.
