Mixed, Not Stirred is a weekly column in which artists curate special, themed playlists via Spotify or other mediums.
In this week’s Mixed, Not Stirred, Allfather vocalist Tom Ballard curated a nu-metal centered playlist featuring heavy-hitters like Slipknot, as well as hidden gems like Pitchshifter. Ballard said the following of the playlist:
“Yeah, I know, “Nu-Metal is shit”, “What an embarrassment”, “You wear stupid baggy shorts and massive trainers” and to be honest, a lot of the time those statements are completely justified (fuck you Hoobastank and Crazy town), in fact, someone only shouted that last one at me a couple of days ago and that someone was one of my best mates Al. However, no matter how uncool it is to admit it, there was a lot of nu-metal that I loved.
And, if we are honest about it, a whole shit load of bands were tagged with the nu-metal band label, not because they sounded like each other, but they came out at a certain time between the mid 90s and mid 00’s, and didn’t necessarily conform to previous blueprints for metal.
As a result this playlist emcompases bands that use rap, hip hop, electronics, samples, horns, blast beats, and good old fashion riffs to create songs that, despite being considered nu-metal, are actually fucking awesome.”
