Necromishka engulf listeners in sprawling, dreary soundscapes on their debut release, The Space Between Us.
Composed of Tamar Singer of dark folk outfits Cruel Wonders and Zeresh, and Michael Zolotov of harsh noise act Kadaver, Necromishka‘s experimental dark ambient sound explores the areas between the Israeli duo’s respective projects. Their full-length debut, The Space Between Us, immediately transports listeners into a realm of encompassing darkness and melancholia. Those who dive into this 40-minute release will find that there is no escape, nor will they want to escape.
“Beast of Pray” opens the record with indiscernible, garbled vocals and ethereal ambiance that gradually becomes darker and more suffocating as it progresses. The sounds of aggressively strummed guitars clamor underneath as the ambiance overhead morphs into a smog of sound that hovers until the end. This leads into the haunting one-two punch of “Paradise (access denied)” and “Blood Room”. The former track features a dense wall of dark atmospherics that bears down upon the listener throughout, while the guitar work inside the sonic haze ranges melodic strumming to atonal playfulness. The latter track, in contrast, is an unnerving piece comprised of more floating dark ambiance that slowly builds into grinding bursts of noise.
The album’s sixth track, “Evil”, takes a break from the walls of sound for a dark folk number that nods to Singer’s Zeresh project. “Evil”‘s simple, yet effective set up revolves around whirling acoustic guitar chords that echo among a backdrop of swirling, hollow noise. Singer’s reverb-laden, commanding vocal performances spearhead the track and aid the tune in becoming one of the record’s standout cuts. Another standout cut includes the nearly eight-minute semi-title track which closes out the record. “There is no Space Between Us” calls Soundtracks for the Blind-era Swans to mind with its simplistic guitar ballads that are drowned in big washes of transcendental sound. It’s an entrancing climax to an entrancing record.
Necromishka‘s The Space Between Us is a solid experimental noise piece that will appease fans of the genre and those who like to be sad all the time.
