Richmond hardcore up-and-comers Candy wreak thrashing havoc on their debut full-length, Good to Feel.
Following their 2017 demo and subsequent lauded EP, Candy Says, Good to Feel sees the band continuing to push their vitriolic brand of hardcore to punishing extremes. Residing somewhere between early Terror and To Die For-era Integrity, Candy‘s sound is nothing short of throttling and royally pissed off. Listeners will be taking inventory of the amount of bruises they accrued at the end of Good to Feel‘s brief but blistering 18-minute duration.
The album’s opening and title track immediately bulldozes the listener with a cacophony of hammering guitars and grinding drums. The 94 second stunner is a maelstrom of noise-laden chaos and vicious vocals that is only heightened by bludgeoning groove-filled breaks. The mayhem refuses to let up as the feedback paves the way for the second track, “Lust for Destruction”, to come galloping in. The track in question is filled to the brim with gritty, palm-muted riffs that happily curb stomp listeners with each chugging chord. “Systematic Death” then sweeps in to finish what “Lust for Destruction” started with its stampeding riffs and incendiary solos that collide into listeners with considerable force.
“Distorted Dreams” breaks the mold the bit by bookending the band’s penchant for chugging metallic violence between two sections of lumbering chords and effect-laden guitar leads. The penultimate track, “Human Target”, is also worth mentioning for its obtuse solos and crushing grooves that remind one of mid-era Helmet riffs, albeit in a hardcore context. Finally, the track “Bigger Than Yours” brings the album to a surprising close with its shoegazing indie rock stylings, clean vocals, and bursts of harsh noise.
Candy‘s Good to Feel is a tough, violent affair that shows the band are on the path to being one of the leading names in modern hardcore.
