In Svbterranean’s Album Dissections, artists break down the construction and/or lyrical themes of their records track by track.
On their fifth full-length record, Future Slum, Pennsylvania’s Backwoods Payback blend gritty stoner groove with grunge and heavy rock ardor into an infectiously catchy and punchy mix. To pick the brains of these rockers, we invited the band to take part in our Album Dissections series to dissect the album track by track. Check out what they had to say below.
Future Slum is our 5th record.
It started out as a collection of songs but as we worked on them it seemed to develop into something closer to a story. A feeling. A movement loosely focusing around the idea that we are all searching for a connection in life.
The songs are open to interpretation, you may hear something completely different each time to listen. This is an outline. One option. One path you might take. What do you believe?
The world is fucked. Society is fucked. Everyone lies. You are disenfranchised with life.
You meet me. I ask you the questions others won’t, or at least they never have in the past. It gets you thinking…
I tell you how we live. How we can be. Whatever you want. You can have it
It Ain’t Right-
You wonder…can you hold these ideas as true as your own? Can you go along with all of this?
You have joined us. I explain our means. I give you your orders…
Welcome to the family
They are our enemy. You have the ideas in you. Your mouth opens, and it’s my words that come out
You go forth into this world, and carry out that which you think I have asked
Your task is completed and here you are. So now you ask yourself “What have you done?”
You thought I was the crazy one…turns out it was…
