2018. A year full of hypocritical idiocy and redundancy. A year of terrible personal atrocities inflicted on one’s self without permission. A year where politics became the new religion, a drug constantly spoon fed and injected into your veins in 24 hour news cycle stenography.
Really there is nothing worse than having an idiotic fascist slowly and moronically try to take over the country while racists and the cult follow every word of his.
All of this happening while I have a TIA (small stroke) and then a regular stroke, missed 2 months of work, and became clinically depressed while traveling around the great state of NY listening to specialists discuss how they don’t have an answer as to why I am 35 years old and having strokes, and seeing how the medical system in this country is a shit show of large bills and debt collectors.
Fun Fact: Telling a specialist you should throw him out the window after he states that he would get the team together after a fourth stroke does not give you answers. But it does feel really fucking good.
The only constant was the unabashed love I have for this genre and this music and the opportunity this website continues to give me as it gives you the ability to read what I think in a verbal diarrhea sort of way; a stream of thoughts turned in to a mangle of words that give you the vague idea I have a clue about what I am doing, where as in reality I hate the sun and my eyes are on fire and I secretly hate everything and everyone.
But enough about me, beautiful, it is time to talk about the music of the year and the best albums, and why I personally dig them and you should just check them out. Be forewarned, I am a hellhole of absurdist comedy and swearing right now, and I stopped drinking, so I can only blame it on the rewired cranial system that is due to blood clots forming and causing damage to my brain in some form that only others can see.
On with the show.
Alice In Chains– Rainier Fog
Alice in Chains is what you get when the old guard comes out and does better music than the new guard, and get barely a credit or decent exposure for it. Why the fuck aren’t you spinning this album or everything this band has done, as most of it from Facelift up to now is between 7 and 10 on a richter scale. It is a sad day when, in my personal opinion, this band’s only missteps seem to be The Devil Put The Dinosaurs There and their first proper full length Facelift, and even those albums are better than the wankfest that most constitute as rock music. Shit is depressing, sad, solitary, and awesome.
YOB– Our Raw Heart
You are hard pressed to find a better metal/doom band with great appeal. This band is heavy, emotional, raw and complex. This album continues that band’s forward momentum like a freight train of fuck you to the naysayers. Molten ball of lead, indeed my friends.
DEAFHEAVEN–Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
I like DEAFHEAVEN and don’t care. This album fucking rules as it is a blend of the continued angst, shoe-gaze and black metal angst that keeps me warm at night. Their album Sunbather was utter perfection. This album is more metal. Fuck the haters.
Pig Destroyer– Head Cage
No explanation needed other than now with 2 more members!
Sunflo’er – No Hell
I reviewed this album. I know this band personally. I watched this band grow. I like this album, and I don’t care if you do not. It is all over the place in a spastic but structurally cohesive and well done sort of way. A well thought out labyrinth of riffs and odd song structures and time signatures that leave most agape and flabbergasted, ready to write them off because they don’t understand it or get it. It is an inside joke, and you are the victim.
Daughters– You Won’t get what you want
Other websites are finally getting warm to Daughters, and jerking off accordingly, stating that this is a “fresh take on noise music” and that you should get in to this. To all the readers who have known of this band, this band has been hip for a long time, with me personally hearing about and loving them since a bunch of friends went to Hellfest in Syracuse in 2003. Now publications are jizzing their pants to this band.
Listen, this is a great album and an evolution in their sound, continuing their changes in sounds from Canada Songs to Hell Songs to the self titled album. A band constantly changing themselves to their preference, letting everyone else know to fuck off. This business is better for bands that do this.
Sleep– The Sciences
A long toke and a slow fuck you to the rest of the metal world. One righteous drag of an album, and perfect all around in what it is meant to convey, in its execution, and in its genre. If you aren’t digging it, then dig the grave because your fucking dead.
Cult Leader– A Patient Man
This band is heavier than their old band. Pissed off, angry, ominous. This band is constant and consistent, with a discography of great jams and great albums well worth your time. Well done and worthy of being on this list.
I reviewed this raucous and awesome album as well. A well traveled and well known band. The punk’s punk band, except with more speed and putting more people to shame. Like a guy who is a a sex addict, on a caffeine high, fucking a soft piece of cheese multiple times because of his sex addiction (Just watch the show “The League”), this album just doesn’t know when to stop and doesn’t care.
Kamasi Washington– Heaven and Earth
Man….Fuck…that is some smooth jazz tenor sax there. A known sideman throughout the hip hop circles and with many albums under his belt, this new one is just afuckingmazing. It is a mindblowingly great album, has a song with an amazing music video, and is just…perfect. It is a making love without consequences, allowing you to be fully enveloped, with the only let down being that it ended, much like the act of coitus. This album should be new required listening.
Those are my favorite albums to come out this year. My personal opinion is open for all to see, not caring as I have bigger fish to fry and different music to suggest. With the political climate the way it is, most people should listen to Burnt By The Sun and Misery Index (NEW ALBUM 2019 BABY!). They are history lessons in metal form.
2019. Coming in hot. Coming in without protection.
