Veiled engulf listeners in an abyss of discordant and nightmarish black metal on their full-length debut, In Blinding Presence.
Otherwise known as (The True) Veiled, this German outfit takes a page from the likes of atonal black metal acts like Ved Buens Ende and Deathspell Omega and craft dark, psychologically-distressing compositions that churn out wave after wave of dissonant malevolence. In Blinding Presence plummets listeners into a bottomless chasm populated by all things chaotic and sinister. It operates on equal levels of clarity, cacophony, discordance, and melody, in the most perverted sense of the word, to achieve an arresting sound that should have black metal fans lapping at their feet.
After the haunting dark ambiance of “Glaring Brume” sets listeners on edge, “Triunity” releases the tension in a blaze of hellfire and kicks the record off properly and punishing. The nearly seven-minute song churns out massive dissonant chords that break apart into various twitching, seizure-like riffs, which gradually build back into towering menace only for the cycle to repeat.
The nightmare continues in the following track, “The Healing Atter”. This short, discombobulating tune begins by echoing traditional, frostbitten black metal before everything shifts into a frightening display of disfigured, frantic instrumentation. Further into the album, the vicious “Selfchasm” rears its head and delivers violent, angular guitar riffs that are strewn about in every which direction with the intent of causing mind-altering damage upon the listener.
From its eerie beginnings to its melancholic, yet nauseating closing track “Bringer of Lambency”, Veiled‘s In Blinding Presence is a non-stop unsettling black metal record that will forcibly burrow its way into listeners’ minds and wreak cerebral havoc. It’s difficult not to be completely entranced by this band’s violent and obtuse take on the genre.
