On their full-length debut, A Culinary Cacophony, Sydney’s Horrisonous unleash sprawling, slithering death metal rife with the fetid stench of the mutilated bodies they’ve left in their wake.
One glance at the artwork for A Culinary Cacophony, not to mention song titles such as “Crispy Chunks of the Obese”, should give listeners an idea of what to expect from these Aussies. Thick, slimy tones, a sinister low-end, snarling, cavernous vocals, and guitars that trudge, gallop and blast at a moment’s notice all coalesce into a modernized, gore-soaked death metal sound that also reeks of the old school. For 42 minutes Horrisonous subject listeners to their delightfully vile and steamrolling brand of aural filth, which will have fans of Asphyx and early Carcass cheering them on.
Lumbering, mammoth-sized riffs come trudging out of squalls of feedback on the opening track “Kuru Worship”, and proceed to transition back and forth between doom marches and disemboweling, serpentine riffs. As it progresses, the song eventually opens up into a relentless, churning cacophony of dissonant, tremolo-picked guitars and bulldozing drumming. This caustic assault bleeds directly into another, “The Gavage”, which immediately tramples listeners with its undeniably heavy grooves and earth-splitting blast beats. Devastating bursts of grimy death metal eventually take hold and spew grinding riffs, groaning string bends, and chugging menace in every direction.
The torture continues in the chaotic “A Tale of Matriphagy”. The album’s fourth track begins its attack with drop-tuned, thrashing guitars that are accompanied by twisted melodies. The instrumentation then conjures up bone-crushing, galloping sludge and writhing, malformed riffs before returning to its triumphant beginnings. The eight-minute leviathan “The Number of the Feast” then brings everything to a cataclysmic conclusion. Seismic death-doom instrumentation stomps and barrels with unrelenting, sordid heaviness throughout the song and eventually reaches a towering climax complete with menacing melodies that burrow into the brain and stay there.
Horrisonous‘ A Culinary Cacophony is a consistently vile and crushing death metal release that sets the bar high for its contemporaries.
