With the use of cinematic storytelling and emphasis on tension and soundscapes, Autism delve deeper into the moodier sides of post-metal on Have You Found Peace?
On 2017’s Film Noir the Lithuanian act delivered multiple shades of post-rock and post-metal in a dynamic metallic package. In contrast Have You Found Peace? sees Autism opting for a more cohesive, sprawling, and atmospheric approach that works in their favor.
The record follows the story of a teenage boy who disappears without a trace shortly after sustaining serious injuries following a car accident. The bleak tale is brought to life by Autism‘s brooding musical style and by numerous collaborators, including Rosk‘s Krzysztof Traczyk who provides narration throughout the album, as well as vocals to the track “No Word”. Everything coalesces into a dark, melancholic, and massive-sounding opus that will have fans of Amenra and Cult of Luna turning their heads.
Suffocating, pulsating soundscapes bring the record to life on “Rememorari” and set the tone for what’s to come. The 11-minute “No Word” follows with swells of darkened ambiance and shadowy sounds that drape over dreary, frostbitten guitars and Traczyk’s quiet crooning. The track then switches to towering, leviathanic riffs that are propelled by Traczyk’s gruff, booming growl. From here “No Word” embarks on a lengthy, riff-fueled journey accompanied by seismic percussion, forlorn melodies, and thick walls of doomed atmosphere. It all feels like getting lost in a snowstorm in the pitch black of night.
The back-and-forth struggle between angelic soundscapes and avalanche-inducing guitar riffs on the nearly eight-minute “Tremorous Luminance” keeps the darkness flowing and potent. The nearly 11-minute “Haunting Recollections” is cut from the same cloth as the massive “No Word”, albeit much more dynamic. The track flows from one extreme to the next with ease, delivering variations of gloomy radiance, thrashing gallops, and blizzards of icy riffs. Erdve‘s Valdas Voveraitis provides saxophone during the latter half of this track, whose solos coil tightly around the song’s darkest moments to strangle what little light happens to be left.
The penultimate “Watching the Flame” brings Oceanic-era Isis to mind with its shimmering melodies and reverberating, sun-kissed atmospheres. Eventually the song takes an edgier turn and climaxes with a barrage of burly, stomping riffs. The record is then brought to a close by “Nycto-“; a three-minute, whirling ambient piece that ties up the record with a feeling of gloom and uncertainty, which is perfect for the record’s concept.
Autism‘s Have You Found Peace? is an ambitious project that transcends the band’s past catalog and is a must-listen for fans of the genre.
