Boundaries deliver a merciless metallic beating on their newest EP release, My Body in Bloom.
While the melding of the early 2000s metalcore sound and modern, beatdown hardcore isn’t uncharted territory by any means, Connecticut’s Boundaries fully embrace the sound and attempt to push it in different, spine-snapping directions, all while waving a middle-finger in the air. My Body in Bloom is a short, but definitely unsweet record whose songs waste no time reaching their boiling points and scalding listeners with metallic ire. Curb-stomping breakdowns, squealing dissonance, throttling rhythms, everything is here and everything is royally pissed.
“Kill Me Patiently” immediately punches listeners in the gut with bulldozing, palm-muted chugs and serpentine melodies to kick off this 19-minute rampage right. The song then transitions into panic chord mayhem and subsequently into stomping, sludge-filled hardcore, all of which are propelled by gruff and aggressive vocals. The song bleeds directly into the opening dark psychedelia of “Blush”, which then explodes into an unending onslaught of ignorantly chugging riffs that aim to batter and bruise.
“Hesitation Wounds” switches things up a bit by delivering galloping metalcore stylings that are eventually overtaken by barrages of dissonant breakdowns that shriek like malfunctioning alarm clocks. The EP’s title track follows next with sinister atmospherics that give way to shape-shifting blitz of metallic hardcore pain. Hammering hardcore chords transition to squalling dissonance and further into grinding death metal instrumentation across this bi-polar beatdown of a tune, leaving no room for the listener to recover.
“Pain Medicine” is rife with off-kilter, palm-mute riffs that thunder within staggering rhythmic shifts. As it progresses the song transitions seamlessly into melodic, emotive post-hardcore before climaxing in a rush of seismic breakdowns. Then “Crxss My Heart” comes crashing in with a blast-beat-driven, disemboweling slam section intertwined with noisy guitar mayhem. From there the track closes out the EP with various displays of seizure-like, angular noise and burly, throat-punching guitars. Everything ends in pure chaos.
My Body in Bloom may not break the mold, but it is more willing to take risks than most of its contemporaries. It’s a chaotic and angry modern hardcore record for angry hardcore fans, plain and simple.
