Portland industrial outfit At the Heart of the World are set to embark on a new U.S. tour early next week in support of their new album, Rotting Forms. Rotting Forms is the first full length offering from Pacific Northwest industrial/metal unit At the Heart of the World, released in January 2018 via Glory Kid Ltd. It’s been a pretty solid year, as far as heavy music is concerned. Some of my favorite artists surpassed even the highest of my expectations, such as Full of Hell, Primitive Man and Blood Sun Circle, while I feel lucky to have been introduced to a few stellar new acts. Bands like Chepang and Sunlight’s Bane completely blew me away with their debut full-length releases, which are both refreshingly unique and utterly intense. This year was also an incredible one for death metal, with a slew of legendary bands offering up impeccable releases, and in some cases, their best work in years. Without further delay, here are my top 20 picks for the best of 2017.
New York experimental duo Insect Ark have announced the release of their sophomore full-length album and follow-up to 2015’s Portal/Well. The new record, which was recorded and mixed with engineer Ethan Donaldson at Mozart Street Studios, will be titled Marrow Hymns (artwork above) and will be released on February 23 via Profound Lore Records.

In my opinion, there are bands you love, and then there are legitimately important bands. Often times, the two will not meet. You can enjoy a band, and if you’re a reasonable person, admit that they’re not genre luminaries or trendsetters. Most bands aren’t. There’s nothing wrong with that. For example; I love Mgla, but to argue that they’re much more than just another really proficient black metal band seems silly to me. They’re not. They’re just good at relying on tropes that others have created to great effect. Godflesh, on the other hand, is not just a band I love, but a band who actually shaped heavy music in the late 80s and early 90s. And now, they’ve returned, yet again, after the stellar “reunion record” 2014’s A World Lit Only By Fire. And with this return, made the most varied album of their career.
Pioneers of industrial metal, Godflesh will unleash their new album Post Self this Friday and it’s going to be a doozy. The band has unveiled a new track titled “Be God” and I’m digging it hardcore. Long-running industrial drone/noise/electronics project Prurient (masterminded by Dominic Fernow), is celebrating its twentieth year and the forthcoming release of Rainbow Mirror in December is shaping up to be a doozy. The album, which boasts an insane three-hour run time, will be released on quadruple CD and a 7LP set. Holy shit.

New York noise metallers Gnaw return with the third chapter in their terrifying discography, Cutting Pieces.
Unifying former and current members of Khanate, Enos Slaughters, Insect Ark and other acts across the underground music spectrum, Gnaw deliver a twisted and outre sound that is anything but easy listening. Its twisted amalgam of noise, industrial and a myriad of other strange musical stylings gnaws into the listener’s psyche, as the band’s name suggests. It’s not easily digestible, but it is highly rewarding for extreme music fans with mashochistic tendencies. Continue Reading
When Blut Aus Nord debuted with Ultima Thulee in the mid nineties after various demos, they were an incredibly talented, albeit fairly typical atmospheric black metal band, in the vein of Burzum and other similar bands. No one, perhaps not even the mastermind behind the band, Vindsval, himself, could have predicted that 20 years later, Blut Aus Nord, would have set the benchmark for experimental black metal. On his latest opus, Deus Salutis Meae, Vindsval has taken the dissonant, industrial laden blueprint that began on 2001’s The Mythical Beast of Rebellion and pushed it even further. In doing so, he has released his darkest and most oppressive sounding album in the last decade.
UK-based industrial/noise duo Khost have announced the release of their third full-length record. The effort, which was produced and mixed by the band themselves and mastered by Martin Bowes, will be titled Governance and will see a release on June 16 via Cold Spring Records on digital and CD formats, with vinyl to follow at a later point. The record will feature 10 new tracks and guest contributions from Oxbow‘s Eugene S. Robinson on the track “Cloudbank Mausoleum” and cellist Jo Quail on “Defraction”. The album will also conclude with a remix of the track “Coven” by Tel Aviv artist Adrian Stainburner.
