It’s been a pretty solid year, as far as heavy music is concerned. Some of my favorite artists surpassed even the highest of my expectations, such as Full of Hell, Primitive Man and Blood Sun Circle, while I feel lucky to have been introduced to a few stellar new acts. Bands like Chepang and Sunlight’s Bane completely blew me away with their debut full-length releases, which are both refreshingly unique and utterly intense. This year was also an incredible one for death metal, with a slew of legendary bands offering up impeccable releases, and in some cases, their best work in years. Without further delay, here are my top 20 picks for the best of 2017.
Well, well, whale. The time has come for every blogger across the world tells you why their favorite album of the year is better than yours. Well, I’m no different. I’m right, you’re wrong. Or something like that. As some of you may know, I like to think of myself as a music vlogger or something, so my list is actually in video form. Four videos actually. The first one is my list of EPs, splits and honorable mentions. Then a brief break and I get down to the nitty-gritty. Thanks for watching and thanks for reading my idiotic words. Continue Reading
Oh, 2017…a year of shit. Like someone punching you in the dick, that is how this year can be described, both personally (fuck strokes and fuck the medical profession for not being open) and professionally (don’t start, as I have a bootheel and a rock to through that certain group back under.). But music, while not totally free and innocent, is still kicking ass and trying something. Here are my top albums, in no order, but totally worth any listen if you got a chance. Continue Reading
Fucking 2017 man. Shit year for life, great year for music. Get into it.
I’m not buying it when someone says “there is no good new music anymore.” I say balls to that. 2017 was an incredible year and truthfully my list could’ve been much longer. I want to give a special shout-out to my Facebook pal Justin Schulte. The last time I met someone who exposed me to as much new music, was when I first met Lane and Ross (from related site American Aftermath and here of course.)
Here’s me, talking about this year.
Fuck, what a year. My favorite band made their best record in a decade. My favorite lady (in music, at least 2 in life are way ahead of her) made her best record ever. I saw more shows than maybe every other year that were of the “I’ll never get a chance to do this” character. I watched my kid grow up a little and loved every second of it. I managed to not get stabbed by my wife. Music was at an all time high for me, especially black metal, and life was pretty good outside of how horrible everything is. I had to do a top 50, and even then, I felt like I left a ton of stuff off. Everything listed below got multiple listens, and if available, purchased on LP. Yes, I buy a lot of records. No I don’t regret it. I can truly say that every ranked record deserved their place. I would have loved to keep this to a top 10. I couldn’t. Oh well. I’ve excluded reissues and non full lengths, and some stuff I didn’t get a ton of time with I just threw in honorable mentions. Without further ado, here’s the kinda shit I like:
2017 has come to a close, which means every blog and music publication gets to bombard you with their shitty opinions on what they thought the best music of the year was. Svbterranean is no different, I am sorry to say. Starting today, a bulk of our writers will begin posting their favorite releases of 2017. Feel to comment and tell us your favorites and what we might have missed. You can also troll us, we don’t mind.
Without further adieu, here is my top 30 releases of the year. There was a multitude of good releases this year and it was extremely difficult to narrow it down to JUST 30. These are the releases that made an impression on me and stuck with me the most year. Just like last year, my favorite records listed span across genres and are not limited to just the extreme music we typically cover on the site. I hope you find something you like. Get into it.
