2017 has come to a close, which means every blog and music publication gets to bombard you with their shitty opinions on what they thought the best music of the year was. Svbterranean is no different, I am sorry to say. Starting today, a bulk of our writers will begin posting their favorite releases of 2017. Feel to comment and tell us your favorites and what we might have missed. You can also troll us, we don’t mind.
Without further adieu, here is my top 30 releases of the year. There was a multitude of good releases this year and it was extremely difficult to narrow it down to JUST 30. These are the releases that made an impression on me and stuck with me the most year. Just like last year, my favorite records listed span across genres and are not limited to just the extreme music we typically cover on the site. I hope you find something you like. Get into it.
Some of you may know that I have moved more towards the world of YouTube, where I talk about physical media multiple times a week. It’s a sweet gig that pays nothing and costs a lot. Good times. Anyway, here is my most recent album review, for one of the grandest albums of the year: Converge‘s new opus The Dusk In Us. Peep me. Continue Reading
Well, I got my pre-order of the new Converge album in yesterday and I was absolutely blown away. I had avoided every single and stream from the album throughout it’s promotion and when I took it in yesterday, I was lost in it. I’m loving it. BUT, this isn’t a review. This is me telling you that you can currently stream the amazing new album, which was released today! Stream the whole shabang below. Do it for your health. You needs you some Converge. All Pigs Must Die (Converge, Trap Them, etc.) are set to release their new LP, Hostage Animal, on October 27, but they’ve made the whole record available to stream in its entirety right now via Noisey. The new release is the full-length followup to 2013’s Nothing Violates This Nature, and is their most dynamic work to date, featuring ten tracks of bleak and intense aggression. Check it out after the break.
Boston-based legends Converge have premiered their new track “Reptilian” off of their long-awaited ninth full-length record, titled The Dusk in Us. The song features an ominous intro with unnerving tones that lead into some pretty crushing dissonant grooves before all that trademark Converge chaos kicks in. Check it out after the break.
Hostage Animal will be released on October 27 via Southern Lord.
Just mere weeks after releasing their new 7″ single, I Can Tell You About Pain, Converge have announced the release of their long-awaited ninth full-length record. The record, which follows 2012’s All We Love We Leave Behind, will be titled The Dusk in Us and will be released on November 3 via Epitaph. The album’s artwork can be seen above and the track listing can be found after the break

Hey there, my name is Marc and I play in a band called Greber and do some other solo shit that I call Cancelled. Making music is something that I have loved to do since I was young and still love to this day. Taking an idea, tweaking it with others and seeing it grow is a short rivaled feeling for me.
For a few years now I have been asking some song and riff writers I admire how they go from having a rough idea to finishing a song. I would ask about their general process, creative influences and basically what worked for them and why. More recently I figured it would be fun to record these Q&A sessions and put them up for others to listen to…so here they are. I’m not an expert by and means but I hope that by being a fly on the wall for these you can steal a few ideas and get more stoked on writing shit.
We’ll be releasing one a month on the main site, which will soon be available on iTunes as well.
The first one I did was with the guitarist of Converge, Kurt Ballou. He had a ton of great stuff to say about how the Converge writing process goes, how he got into writing and things he finds help them not over-edit their work. Bon Listening.
Mutoid Man have premiered a new track from their forthcoming sophomore full-length, War Moans, via Metal Injection. Titled “Melt Your Mind”, the blistering new single once again showcases the band’s eclectic blend of down-tuned, technically-proficient groove and hard rock swagger. Check out the track after the break.
War Moans will be released on June 2 via Sargent House and can be purchased here.
The band’s upcoming tour dates with Helms Alee can also be found below.
