Cult of Luna and Julie Christmas have premiered a new track from their upcoming collaborative record, Mariner, at Stereogum. The new track is the leviathanic “The Wreck of S.S. Needle”, which features over nine minutes of post-metal glory. The track starts off slow with ominous soundscapes and Christmas‘ recognizable crooning. After about a minute the song explodes into thunderous melancholic sludge as Christmas shreds her vocal chords to bits. The song is similar to Christmas‘ short-lived Battle of Mice project, but arguably more vicious. Check out the towering track after the break.
Mariner will be released on April 15 via Indie Recordings.
Let’s just get this out of the way now; Cult of Luna are, and have been for the past…a bunch of years, my absolute favorite band. This isn’t hyperbole. I have their lyrics tattooed on me, I have spent a ridiculous amount of money obtaining original pressings of their albums (mostly right before they get repressed because I have awful luck, but that’s neither here nor there…), and I have seen every American show that they’ve played, travelling states away to do so. My wife is due to give birth to a baby girl this weekend, and her middle name will be Luna. HAVE I PROVED MY FANBOYISM YET?
Swedish post-metal titans Cult of Luna and Ex-Made Out of Babies vocalist Julie Christmas have premiered a new track from their upcoming collaborative album, Mariner, which is due out on April 8. Titled “A Greater Call”, the eight minute track begins with ethereal melodies and soundscapes, which eventually bleed into transcendental post-metal death marches. The band commented on the new tune:
“A Greater Call is the link between the city and the void above.
Imagine walking up to your vessel and how the excitement grabs hold of you. The feeling of uncertainty.
Are you even going to be able to push through the atmosphere in one piece?
A last breathe before blast off and then we leave.
The song is about how humanity is cutting its losses and leave a dying planet. Its only hope lies above.
Although it might not be representative of the album as a whole and Julie’s involvement.
It is where the journey starts.”
