Back in October, Brett Netson’s (Built to Spill, etc) droning rock project Snakes and Canadian psych rockers Crosss released their sprawling split via Netson’s own Scavenger Cult. One part desert dwelling soundtrack and one part noisy bombardment, this rather lengthy split highlights the strengths of two very different acts and how they work together to create a rather cinematic experience.

Brazilian avant-punks Deafkids
are a band that sound like no other. Although rooted in punk, the band’s sound transcends genre conventions and takes sonic risks most musical acts wouldn’t take. Gritty, noisy guitars are met with elements of drone, harsh noise and psychedelia to create cacophonous walls of sound, with some semblance of a hardcore song throbbing underneath. Electronic meddling, polyrhythmic freakouts, and a myriad of other atypical musical techniques and instrumentation also play a role in the band’s strange, singular sound. Deafkids
provide a complete sensory overload, plain and simple.
In May 2016, Deafkids released their jarring full-length, Configuração do Lamento, which was re-released on Neurot Recordings the following year after label head and Neurosis guitarist Steve Von Till was blown away by it. Earlier this year, Richmond, Virginia hardcore quartet Outsider released their debut demo tape via Flatspot Records. Featuring current and former members of Cold Touch, Upperhand, and others, Outsider is yet another band effectively modernizing a classic hardcore sound. Full of galloping rhythms, adrenaline pumping guitar riffs, and raw aggression, Outsider’s 2018 demo is a hard-hitting release that will serve as a precursor for what is to come.

In February, Swedish hardcore outfit Broken Cross unleashed its sophomore full-length, Militant Misanthrope, via Apocalyptic Visions, Judas Chair Collective and Psychic Rebellion. The brainchild of one-man riff machine Niklas Holm, Broken Cross‘ apocalyptic vision of hardcore melds together elements of crossover thrash and metallic hardcore, resulting in songs both of a deadly and catchy nature. On Militant Misanthrope, Holm really refines Broken Cross‘ sound and delivers nine tracks of hard-hitting metallic goodness.
