HAAN is a blistering 4 piece noise rock band from NYC, operating in the spirit of all that description implies. In the grand, grimy tradition of their forebears like Helmet and Unsane, HAAN will hit you in the gut and leave you lying breathless in the street. Their particular fusion of post punk/hardcore and hard rock is muscular and undulating, not leaving anything to the imagination as they strip all of the filth and stress and rage off of daily life and hold it up in front of your face. This is exactly what the band accomplishes on their new offering By the Grace of Blood and Guts, out 8/10/18 on Aqualamb Records. Continue Reading
Noise rock pioneers Unsane are set to release their eighth studio album, Sterilize, tomorrow (September 29) via Southern Lord. But first, they’re offering up a full stream of the new record via Noisey. The record, which follows 2012’s Wreck, was recorded by bassist/vocalist Dave Curran at Gatos Trail Studios in Yucca Valley, California, mixed by Andrew Schneider at Acre in New York City, and mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering in Chicago.
With Sterilize, Unsane reaffirm their status as the kings of noise rock and show no signs of being dethroned any time soon.
Since rising to prominence in the underground heavy music scene in the 90s, Unsane have continuously been a driving and influential force in the realms of punk and metal for well over two decades. Their abrasive, non-conventional take on what is concidered “rock” music, coupled with biter lyrics and jarring artwork depicting real-world violence, created a lasting impact in the scene that can still be felt today. Though noise rock has still thrived and progressed (and has had a bit of a quiet resurgence in recent years) since the Amphetamine Reptile days, no newer players within the genre have been able to outmatch the tried and true formula Unsane has perfected.

Noise rock legends Unsane have released a new track from their highly-anticipated forthcoming album, Sterilize, which is due out on September 29 via Southern Lord. The new track, titled “Aberration”, is true blue Unsane with its gritty, metallic sound. The band said of the track:
“‘Aberration’ is classic Unsane, raw and direct, it only took a couple of takes to lock it down. It’s essentially a ditty about the swirling thoughts that go through your head after being screwed over. I’m sure anyone can appropriate or relate it to their personal experiences.”
Check out the track after the break along with the band’s upcoming European tour dates.

NYC’s Crushed is a band that came entirely out of left field for me. Someone told me to check out a couple of tracks from their new album Deep User on bandcamp, and then I saw it was a hardcore band and kind of sighed to myself a little because there have been a total of like five new hardcore records I have really liked in about as many years. So far though, 2017 seems to be shaping up to be an exception to this rule – which is exciting. Continue Reading
