Benefits of listening music before sleep

Various types of music have an impact on sleeping disorders. Listening to music before sleep is one of the ways to lessen sleep onset latency (SOL) and prolong total sleep time (TST). This is because listening to good music decreases sympathetic nervous activation and increases parasympathetic nervous activation which ultimately helps you go to bed faster .

The effects of listening to music before sleep can be seen in terms of behavioural outcomes, physiological parameters and brain activity.

For example, according to a study by Ritter et al., the time it takes for an individual to fall asleep was reduced if they were exposed to music before sleeping. Another study by Tulloch et al., also showed that listening to naturalistic sound has positive effects on daytime wellbeing, performance and mood. Participants were exposed to music, nature sounds and a control condition before sleeping each night for a week. The results showed that the participants preferred to listen to naturalistic sound. They also reported better sleep quality and mood compared to the other conditions in which they had less positive moods and weaker performance.

Listening to music helps people with insomnia fall asleep faster and helps them get higher quality sleep. It also helps people who have trouble sleeping due to neurological problems like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and epilepsy.

Listening to music before sleeping lowers cortisol levels which are responsible for stress. It also slows heart-rate down and induces pleasant feelings of relaxation which is necessary for healthy sleep.
